IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the given two maps indicates the pre4sent layout of a small town called islip and the proposed plan for future development.
it can be clearly seen that, the town planned change from a road-based center to a pedestrian-focused area with new public facilities. the countryside to the north will be developed, the main road will become car-free, and additional housing and transport infrastructure added. some existing features such as school and housing remain.
at present, the town is split by a main road running east to west. shops line both sides of this road. to the north side of the road is countryside, while the south side of the road is dominated by housing. there is park in the southeast corner and a school in the southwest.
according to the plants, the main will be only pedestrians and the number of shops will be reduced to a row on the southside. a new curved dual carriageway will be build around the north, replacing the countryside. within this loop, a bus station, shopping center, car park and new housing are proposed. new housing will also be built south of the shops, and the park will be moved slightly to the east. the school and the other housing areas will stay the same area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, including the shift from a road-based center to a pedestrianized area and the addition of new infrastructure. You made relevant comparisons between the current layout and the proposed plans. However, the response could be improved by providing more precise details regarding the locations of the new facilities, such as the specific placement of the bus station or the shopping center relative to the new housing. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the current state and the proposed changes. You use some cohesive devices such as 'at present' and 'according to the plans' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother; some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, the paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within the second body paragraph could be strengthened by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the various proposed developments.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pedestrian-focused', 'dual carriageway', and 'infrastructure'. There are some minor errors, such as 'pre4sent' (typo) and 'plants' instead of 'plans'. While you use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'the town planned change from a road-based center to a pedestrian-focused area'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the given two maps indicates') and missing articles ('there is park'). Additionally, there are some awkward phrasings like 'the main will be only pedestrians' and 'will be build'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
