IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The map illustrates the current map of a town named Islip and the blueprint for the future of the same.
Overall, the strip of shops and residence will remain similar to the present setting, with the addition of a few new facilities. The major change will be the layout of the road surrounding the town.
Currently, the main road divides the shops which are parallel to each other, towards the north of the town. The future plan is to covert the main road into a walking path for pedestrians. While the south line of shops remain the same, the north west side of the shops will be converted into a bus station, shopping centre and car park. The space from the countryside will be used to accommodate these modern facilities. A new housing area will replace some of the shops towards the north east. The housing towards the south will curb the size of the play park.
The most notable change will be the circular construction of the road that borders the town centre. This paves the way for a dual carriage system, making transport accessible to the school and additional residences at the extreme south of Islip.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the key features of the Islip development plan, including the road changes, the pedestrianization of the town centre, and the new facilities. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the maps. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For example, you mention that housing will 'curb the size of the play park,' but it would be more accurate to describe the specific location or the extent of this reduction. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well and provided a clear summary of the proposed changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a summary paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'While,' 'Currently,' and 'The most notable change' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the specific details. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the progression from the current state to the future development is easy to follow. To improve further, ensure that referencing is always clear, particularly when describing the spatial relationships between the new facilities and the existing structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the maps, using terms like 'blueprint,' 'pedestrians,' 'accommodate,' and 'dual carriage system.' There is an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'covert' (which should be 'convert') and 'residence' (which is better used as 'residential area' in this context). While these do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would elevate your score. Overall, your vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear description of the town's transformation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While the south line of shops remain the same, the north west side of the shops will be converted...' which shows good control. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'shops remain' vs 'shops remains' or 'housing... will curb'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and your sentences are easy to read. To achieve a higher band, aim for a wider variety of complex structures and ensure that subject-verb agreement is consistently maintained throughout the text.
