Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the maps showing the current layout of Islip and proposed developments, fulfilling the basic requirements of Task 1. However, the student struggles to report specific spatial changes accurately, relying on vague generalisations such as 'massive change of city structure by dual carriageway, housing, and so many things.' Key features like the conversion of shops to residential areas, the addition of a pedestrianised zone, and the relocation of facilities are mentioned in a somewhat confused manner. The overview attempts to capture the main difference—the addition of the dual carriageway and new facilities—but overall development of the information is limited, placing this response at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is organised into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and poor cohesion. Phrases like 'Looking into more details' and 'In term of local services and architecturual view' attempt to guide the reader but are mechanically applied. Referencing is often unclear, such as 'all kind of stuff like Bus station...' where the pronoun use and overarching grouping create confusion. Paragraphing is attempted but lacks the internal cohesion required for higher bands, resulting in a Band 5.0 score for this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily restricted, relying on informal phrases like 'fewer stuff', 'so many things', and 'all kind of stuff'. There are frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'developemnt', 'townn', 'unmange', 'Pedestrains', 'newely', and 'architecturual'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary (e.g., 'dual carriageway', 'shopping centre', 'bus station'), the range is minimally adequate at best. These noticeable lexical errors and limitations place the response firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 due to some correct functional terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, incorrect verb forms, and punctuation issues throughout the response, such as 'current Islip town center is like unmange', 'its is looking old model designed city', and 'are stayed inside'. Subject-verb agreement is frequently broken (e.g., 'town center have all facilities', 'development Islip town centre have wide range'). These persistent errors often cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 4.5 level, though simple sentences occasionally communicate basic meaning.
