Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by comparing the current map of Islip town centre with the planned development. Key features such as the pedestrianisation of the main road, the introduction of a dual carriageway, and the addition of new facilities like a bus station, shopping centre, and car park are mentioned. However, the response lacks a clear, cohesive overview and suffers from numerous inaccuracies in spatial description and data selection. For instance, the placement of the new housing and the relationship of the school and park to the dual carriageway are confusingly described. The development is described as 'looking like modern', which is informal and subjective. Overall, the response meets the basic requirement of discussing the maps, but the delivery is superficial and lacks the precision expected of an academic task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The response is inadequately paragraphed, opening with an introductory sentence fragment and combining multiple distinct thoughts into a single block of text. There is a lack of logical progression and clear mechanical cohesion. Transitional phrases are basic or misused, such as 'In now Islip town centre' and 'On the other hand planned development map'. Pronoun referencing and spatial markers (like 'in the right side' and 'in the left side') are poorly handled, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial transformation of the town. Paragraphing is extremely weak, with the entire body of the report crammed into poorly structured chunks without a distinct overview or concluding summary.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, showing a limited range inadequate for a formal academic report. Spelling mistakes are frequent, such as 'middel', 'compared' (instead of compare), 'suituated', 'Inaddition', 'schoole', and 'nourth'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items related to town planning like 'dual carriageway', 'shopping centre', and 'pedestrianisation', but these are often surrounded by awkward phrasing and inaccurate collocations. Words are frequently misused, for instance stating that the map 'is looking like modern'. The lexical limitations significantly strain the reader's comprehension.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical structures attempted are largely simplistic and contain frequent, fundamental errors. The response contains major structural flaws, such as the opening sentence ('The maps illustrate that the middel... and ideas for its creation.'), which lacks a main verb or complete clause structure. There is a heavy reliance on simple sentences with verb agreement issues (e.g., 'a main road is suituated and both sides of this road have', 'a school and housing, but in the middle... there are'). Complex structures are rarely attempted, and when they are, they are heavily flawed. Punctuation is also neglected, with missing commas and run-on clauses throughout.
