Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response attempts to describe the changes shown in the two maps of Islip town centre, but it fails to provide a clear or well-structured overview. Several key features are either missed or inaccurately described, such as the removal of the countryside, which is not depicted as being removed, and the vague descriptions of relocated facilities. The information is presented in a very basic manner without clear selection or comparison of the main trends. Furthermore, the response is just barely at the minimum word count of 150 words, leading to under-developed ideas. It meets the minimum threshold for a Band 4.0 as it touches upon the prompt, but fails to reach Band 5 due to the lack of clear progression, misinterpretation of map details, and limited development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text lacks proper paragraphing, presented instead as a single block or two poorly structured sentences. There is almost a complete lack of cohesive devices, and sentences are strung together using run-on structures (e.g., "...and new housing wil be near market they will have every facility..."). The logical progression of information is severely impaired, making it very difficult for the reader to follow the spatial comparisons between the current and planned maps. Referencing is unclear throughout, and organizational markers are absent. This corresponds to the Band 4.0 descriptors where information and ideas are not arranged coherently, and paragraphing is inadequate.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The lexical range is very limited and repetitive, relying on basic words like "shop", "housing", "park", and "school". There are numerous word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as "country side", "ilip", "upgreation", and "wil". Less common vocabulary is attempted with poor control and inaccurate collocations (e.g., "every facility of life", "facilities of up dated life"). These lexical limitations and frequent spelling errors cause strain for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak, with a very limited range of structures. The text consists mostly of poorly constructed, overly long, run-on sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions like "and" and relative clauses without proper punctuation. There are frequent, heavy grammatical errors including missing articles, incorrect verb tenses (e.g., "Main road will be replace"), and subject-verb agreement issues. Error frequency is extremely high across almost every sentence, meaning communication is frequently impeded, which aligns with the Band 4.0 descriptors.
