Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially, failing to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words by finishing short at 134 words. While the student attempts to compare the current map of Islip with the planned development, the information provided is very limited and lacks a clear overview. Key features such as the pedestrianisation of the central street, the introduction of the dual carriageway loop, and the replacement of shops with a bus station, shopping centre, and car park are described in a very fragmented and underdeveloped manner. The descriptions of locations are imprecise, such as referring to facilities being on the 'left side' or 'right side', rather than using compass directions or spatial relationships accurately shown on the maps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation evident in the division into paragraphs, with an introduction, present layout, future plans, and a brief concluding remark. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are basic, inaccurate, or repetitive, with excessive reliance on transitional phrases like 'In present,' 'in future,' and 'It can be seen that'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak, making the relationships between ideas and spatial features difficult for the reader to follow smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student relies on basic, repetitive vocabulary, such as repeating words like 'facility', 'housing', 'shops', and 'develop' multiple times. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'town center what is now', 'what is happend', 'peace' instead of 'space', and 'attach in south'. These lexical inaccuracies and non-standard usages cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted vocabulary range that struggles to adequately describe map features and transformations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The student uses a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences alongside faulty attempts at complex or compound structures. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense misuse ('town center have', 'town center will more develop'), missing articles ('in present', 'school', 'park'), incorrect prepositions ('in left side of main road'), and subject-verb agreement issues. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, demonstrating weak control over basic grammatical patterns and punctuation.
