IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The map below illustrates the middle of a small town called islip right now and also shows ideas for further development.
As you can see from the map there are lots of production and development in future shown in second diagram.
Clearly it can be seen from the diagram that the centre of town will advanced to further more developments like the middle part will be covered with a circular road covering each and every side of it.The main road will be limited to a pedestrians track only having a shopping centre in the north of track, having bus station in the west and car parking area in the eastern side of centre.Furthermore it can be seen a new housing society been built in the right east of the parking area.
Moreover in the south direction of walking track there seen to be more shops having new and multiple housing societies below the southern part of it along with a park sideby. However it seems that the circular road or track will cover all the passage ways having school on the opposite side of round track facing south opposite of housing society along side a new housing scheme in the east of school.Overall it seems taht the new development will lighten up the past architect of town

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to compare the current map of Islip with the proposed development plans. While some main features are mentioned, such as the pedestrianisation of the main road, the addition of a dual carriageway, and the placement of new housing and a shopping centre, the information is somewhat limited and lacks a clear overview. The selection of features is incomplete, and certain descriptions are vague or lack precision, such as referring to 'lots of production and development', which does not accurately reflect the visual data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response displays some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas, resulting in a somewhat disjointed structure. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with large blocks of text and unusual spacing that disrupt the flow. While some basic cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used, referencing is occasionally unclear, and the mechanical transitions make the progression difficult to follow at times.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited, featuring basic and repetitive vocabulary suitable for minimally communicating the content. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'will advanced to further more developments' and 'right east', which cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to urban planning, but these attempts are often imprecise or inaccurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('having school on the opposite side'), incorrect verb forms ('there seen to be more shops', 'housing society been built'), and awkward prepositional phrases. These errors often impede communication and require the reader to re-read sentences to grasp the intended meaning.
