Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response makes a minimal attempt to address the prompt by mentioning some elements of the maps, such as the shops, housing, park, and new developments like the bus station and shopping centre. However, the information is presented in a very confused and disjointed manner. There is no clear overview of the main changes, and the relationship between the current layout and the proposed plans is poorly communicated. Many details are inaccurately described, such as claiming the countryside decided to plan new developments, and key features like the dual carriageway loop are described unclearly as a roundabout. The writing touches upon the task only tangentially due to severe misinterpretations of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently in this response. The text lacks any logical organisation or paragraphing, being written as a single, dense block of sentences. There is a lack of overall progression, making it extremely difficult for the reader to follow the spatial relationships between the current town centre and the planned changes. Cohesive devices are used inappropriately or mechanically, such as abrupt transitions like 'After that;', 'However;', and 'As well as,', which fail to establish clear logical connections between ideas. Reference words are also confusing, resulting in a text that is hard to navigate.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on inappropriate word choices and incorrect collocations that strain the reader's comprehension. Terms are misused throughout the text, such as referring to the town as 'the country' or 'countryside', and using phrases like 'housing scheme or parkor school'. Word forms are often incorrect, and there is a heavy reliance on words from the prompt without demonstrating an adequate range. While some basic vocabulary is present, the frequent errors in word choice severely impede communication and prevent the effective reporting of visual data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of poorly constructed, fragmented, or overly simplified sentences that frequently distort meaning. There are frequent, pervasive errors in almost every sentence, including missing or incorrect verbs, faulty word order, missing prepositions, and improper punctuation. For example, clauses are improperly linked with semicolons or commas followed by conjunctions in ungrammatical ways, as seen in 'In this map, shows tahat the islip town centre.' The accumulation of basic errors in tense, sentence structure, and agreement makes the text difficult to parse.
