Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response only partially addresses the prompt because it falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 124 words. Furthermore, the description of the visual data is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence at the end. While the student attempts to provide an overview and some details comparing the current town layout with the proposed developments—such as mentioning shops transforming into a shopping centre and transport facilities being added—the ideas are limited, under-developed, and lack specific supporting details from the maps.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response shows some basic organisation with an attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overall summary, and detailed points. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the text ends abruptly. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or mechanically applied, such as transitional phrases like 'In detail' and 'Comparitively', which do not create a smooth, logical flow between ideas. Referencing between sentences is also occasionally unclear, affecting the overall readability of the report.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'illustraste', 'alot', 'housings' (housing is uncountable), 'occuping', and 'Comparitively'. The student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to town planning, such as 'infrastructure facilities' and 'proposed map', but the frequent inaccuracies and lack of precision in word form cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or faulty attempts at complex ones. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('housings ... are occuping'), missing articles ('a islip'), and incorrect preposition use. Punctuation errors are also present, such as unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. These frequent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though the core meaning of the sentences can generally still be deciphered.
