Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response recognises that the maps compare Islip now with a planned development and mentions several relevant features, including the main road, shops, housing, park, car parking and new houses. However, it does not clearly summarise the main changes or give an accurate overview. For example, it says there will be “many shops,” but the plan retains the southern shops while replacing the northern row with a bus station, shopping centre and car park. The school is not newly provided; it remains in place outside the new road loop. The response also misplaces the countryside beside the shops and gives little detail about the pedestrian-only street or dual carriageway. It is 7 words below the required minimum. Select the major changes and describe them precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response into paragraphs, moving from the existing town to the proposed development. Some linking expressions, such as “However” and “Meanwhile,” signal a change in focus. Nevertheless, the progression is difficult to follow because the opening repeats the idea that Islip is the town centre, and the response repeatedly says the town “has to” be developed rather than comparing the two maps. Connections between locations are also unclear, as in “beside shops thoer is houses and countryside.” Use a clear overview followed by separate descriptions of the current layout and planned changes, and use location-based links such as “to the north” and “in contrast.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant map vocabulary, including “main road,” “both side,” “car parking,” “new houses” and “park,” so the reader can identify the general subject. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or repeated, particularly “developed” and “new features.” Spelling errors such as “thent,” “thoer” and “avaliability” also reduce accuracy. Some expressions, including “many shops in one way,” do not clearly describe the planned layout. Aim for precise terms for the map changes and avoid repeating general words. For example, distinguish the shopping centre from the retained shops and describe the dual carriageway as a loop around the centre.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to combine ideas using clauses and connectors, for example, “because it was in the center of the town” and “which people can go.” However, sentence structures are often faulty, and verb forms are repeatedly inaccurate: “we have to developed” and “we developes” should use a consistent, correct form. There are also problems with articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, as in “there is main road” and “their is shops.” These errors make several sentences difficult to interpret, although the general topic remains understandable. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add controlled comparisons using forms such as “The plan replaces…” and “The park will be reduced.”
