Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The information provided in the given maps illustrates the current view of a city centre of a small town namely: Islip and plans for its redevelopment in the future.

Overall, it is quite clear from the maps that there will be significant changes in the future by the most noticeable modification will the single line road of the centre into a dual carriageway surrounded by many new housing and other developed infrastructures such as shopping centre, bus station and many more.

Presently, the Islip town centre is quite simple and straightforward which has a single way road between the map from east to west sides. Likewise, the north side of the road is occupy by multiple shops and behind the shops there is some rural area of the countryside. Similarly, the southern side of the road also reserved by many shops and the shouthernmost areas have wide range of public housing. Moreover, a rectangular shape of park is seen in the southeast side of the centre link with a small subway to the main road, simultaneously, a school for the town children is placed in the souther west side of the map link with a single a subway with main road.

Planned development, the most significant modification of a single line road into dual carriageway and not sraightforward from west to east but in the circular shape over the map. In addition, the south side of the road shops remain in the same place, while the northern side shops will completely raplaced by car park, shoping centre and bus station and a new housing area by including some area from countryside. Conversely, the center of the islip town centre will be expected to build new housing for public, whereas the southernmost area will be stay constant with old housing and a school at the southwest corner of the main road. Furthermore, the location of the public park will be remain stable but the size will be slightly small as compared to the old one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main contrast between the present layout and the planned redevelopment, and your overview correctly highlights the new road arrangement and added facilities. You also report several key changes, including the replacement of the northern shops by a bus station, shopping centre and car park, and the smaller park. However, some details are inaccurate or too general: the dual carriageway forms a loop around the centre rather than simply being a circular road “over the map”; the central east–west street becomes pedestrian-only, not a dual carriageway; and the school and southern housing remain outside the loop. The park does not remain in the same location in an entirely unchanged way, as its area is reduced. More precise comparisons and clearer separation of the two road features would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a description of the current map and a paragraph on the plan. This gives the reader a useful overall progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “Conversely” help signal relationships. However, some transitions are mechanical or do not accurately express the relationship between ideas, while long sentences combine several locations and changes, making the description harder to follow. For example, the sentence beginning “Planned development” moves from the road to shops and housing without clear grouping. The reference to “the center of the Islip town centre” is also unclear. Organise details consistently by north and south, and use shorter sentences with clear references to each map feature.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “redevelopment,” “dual carriageway,” “countryside” and “southernmost,” and you attempt to describe location and change. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision. Phrases such as “single way road,” “public housing” and “a single subway” do not describe the map appropriately; the latter appears to mean a side road. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “shouthernmost,” “sraightforward,” “raplaced” and “shoping.” “Infrastructures” is not a natural choice for the facilities shown. Build a more accurate set of terms for roads, land use and map changes, and check spelling carefully so the reader can identify each feature without guessing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “whereas,” but complex constructions are often faulty and errors occur frequently. Examples include “the north side of the road is occupy,” “the most significant modification … into dual carriageway,” and “the southernmost area will be stay constant.” These show problems with verb forms, sentence construction and agreement. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “in the southeast side” and “link with the main road.” Some sentences are so overloaded that their grammatical relationships become difficult to follow. Practise accurate present-tense descriptions for the existing map and future forms for the plan, and use shorter, complete sentences before adding subordinate clauses.
