Student answer (Band 5.0)

The chart illustrates that centre of a small town called islip as it is now, and plans for its development

Overall i think the development of islip will better and amazing as compared to now therefore everything will be in seperate like bus station shopping centre car park and etc. In the future the Islip town will more significant if the planned will be development. In the north side the people will buy everthing at the same palce they will not faced any diffcultry at this time it will be the benefits for people who will live in town.

We will discuss the first phase islip town now. The map of the town is simple not good like some shops and one linked road only in the town. In the east side the small park is located and the north side the schoolis located. And some hosuing in the mid of town.

On the other hand the development planned of islip town centre. In the north side will be bus station and shopping centre also car park. In the town it will be huge pedestrians. in the west side it will be dual carriageway and also will be school.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the two maps and mention several relevant planned features, including the bus station, shopping centre, car park and dual carriageway. However, the response only partially summarises the changes and does not give a clear, factual overview. The opening overview focuses on the development being “better and amazing” and its benefits, rather than describing the main spatial changes. There are also important inaccuracies: the school is south of the town centre, not on its north side, and the dual carriageway forms a loop around the centre rather than being only in the west. Include the pedestrian-only central street, retained southern shops, and changes to housing and the park to make the comparison more complete and accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has separate paragraphs for an overview, the current map and the proposed plan, so there is some basic organisation. However, progression is limited: the overview repeats general claims about future benefits instead of previewing the main changes, and the final paragraph ends without a concluding comparison. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In the north side” are used, but they do not always express the relationship between ideas clearly. For example, the school is incorrectly placed in the north, making the sequence of locations confusing. Organise the body by comparing corresponding areas—for instance, the northern shops with the planned facilities, then the central road and southern area—and use clear location references throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “bus station,” “shopping centre,” “car park,” “housing” and “dual carriageway,” which helps identify map features. However, the range is limited and several informal or imprecise expressions make the description less suitable for an academic report. Phrases such as “better and amazing,” “huge pedestrians” and “some shops and one linked road” do not describe the map accurately or naturally. Spelling errors, including “seperate,” “everthing” and “diffcultry,” are noticeable and can distract the reader. Aim for precise map language such as “is located,” “is replaced by,” “remains,” and “to the north of,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, but the range is limited and errors occur frequently, sometimes making relationships between features difficult to follow. For example, “the development of islip will better” is missing a suitable verb form, while “the Islip town will more significant” also lacks the verb “be.” Articles and sentence construction are often problematic, as in “We will discuss the first phase islip town now.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, and several sentences run together or lack clear grammatical links. Practise accurate present and future forms for map descriptions, such as “The park is located to the east” and “The shops will be replaced by a shopping centre,” before attempting longer comparisons.
