Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely believed that in their advertising, businesses today people usually emphasise that their product are new in some way such as increases sales, beat competitors and show innovation. In my opinion, it is a positive development.

The major reason is more innovation when the consumer gets better quality and more efficient product. it creates a curiosity into people's mindset for the upcoming upgraded product. Additionally, it improves people's lifestyle through advance product. There is an increasing trend of using iPhone in today's generation because it is a symbol of luxury and Betterly known for its privacy.

Moreover, there is another reason, increasing jobs in various sectors for research, design and manufacturing and the unemployment rate will decrease. It will encourage companies for technological development and create a healthy competition between companies. For instance, people are confused between Apple and Samsung because they are offering good quality products and they are healthy competitors for each other.

However, it will encourage unnecessary spending and impulsive buying. People are spending on useless products which they do not need but, they need to buy it through the trend of social media.

In conclusion, although advertisement has a fear of overspending, but the benefits such as innovation and advance technology is the major requirement of today's generation, and it outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the focus on 'newness' and providing a clear opinion. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas regarding innovation, job creation, and consumerism are relevant, they are presented in a somewhat superficial manner. The conclusion is brief and lacks a summary of the main points. To improve, you should expand on your arguments with more detailed examples and ensure you meet the word count requirement to allow for a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'The major reason', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used to signal transitions between ideas. However, the flow is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and minor errors in sentence structure. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks could be smoother. Paragraphing is present, but the concluding paragraph is quite short and does not fully synthesise the preceding arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are instances of non-standard word forms, such as 'Betterly' (which is not a word) and 'advance product' (should be 'advanced'). While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'innovation', 'competitors', and 'manufacturing', the range is limited. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that word forms are grammatically correct in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'product are new' (subject-verb agreement), 'curiosity into people's mindset' (preposition error), and 'advertisement has a fear of overspending' (incorrect word choice). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in comma usage and sentence boundaries. To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate more control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips.
