Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize 'newness' and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as the competitive nature of markets and the strategy of incremental product updates. However, the development is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding why businesses do this is clear, but the discussion on the negative consequences could be more deeply explored with more specific examples beyond the mention of smartphones. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6 level, as some points remain slightly under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Nevertheless', and 'To recapitulate', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although there are occasional lapses in flow due to grammatical errors. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure helps the reader follow the argument without significant difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'competitive market', 'upgraded goods', and 'vogue'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'many youngster are crazy for iphone' and 'whenever discover they feel dishearten'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a lack of precision and control over more sophisticated lexical items. Expanding the range of collocations would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('many youngster are'), article usage ('the Apple company'), and word order ('business to showcase their new products to wide range'). While these errors are noticeable and occur frequently, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to focus on sentence-level accuracy and proofreading for basic grammatical slips.
