Student answer (Band 7.0)
It cannot be denied that nowadays advertising plays a crucial role in businesses for increase in sales and attract customers in the recent time it becomes a common trend for companies to highlight their products are new to a certain extent, there are so many reasons behind it, and I believe it represent a pessimistic development. both reason and my perspective will be elaborated further in the ensuing paragraphs.
Focusing on reasons, the most important one is, in a competitive market, companies must differentiate themselves from rivals, and presenting their goods as innovative helps them capture attention. Moreover, technological advancements and changing consumer preferences encourage firms to constantly update their products. For instance, smartphone manufacturers frequently release updated models with minor changes, yet they advertise them as revolutionary to stimulate demand.
However, I consider this trend to be pessimistic. Firstly, it often misleads customers, as many products advertised as “new” may only have superficial changes rather than genuine improvements. This can create unrealistic expectations and lead to disappointment. Secondly, the constant emphasis on novelty encourages overconsumption, pushing people to buy items they do not truly need, which contributes to waste and environmental damage. Lastly, such advertising strategies may undermine trust between businesses and consumers, as people become having doubts of exaggerated claims.
In conclusion, while businesses highlight the newness of their products to attract attention and remain competitive in the market, I believe this is a negative development. It fosters consumerism, misleads buyers, and damages long-term trust in products advertising.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the trend of emphasizing 'newness' and clearly stating a position that it is a negative development. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the discussion on overconsumption and the erosion of consumer trust. However, the introduction is slightly rushed and contains some run-on sentence structures that hinder the clarity of the initial position. To reach a higher band, ensure that the introduction clearly delineates the two parts of the prompt and provides a more sophisticated thesis statement. Overall, the response is well-focused and maintains a consistent perspective throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, and the use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Firstly' helps to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the evaluation. While the flow is generally good, some transitions between sentences could be smoother to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For instance, the opening sentence is a long, comma-spliced run-on that affects the coherence of the introduction. Improving sentence-level connectivity would elevate this score.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. You have used topic-specific terms such as 'differentiate', 'consumer preferences', 'superficial changes', and 'overconsumption' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'pessimistic development' (a negative development is more standard) and 'people become having doubts' (people have doubts or are becoming doubtful). While the range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly in the introduction, such as the lack of proper punctuation between independent clauses ('...attract customers in the recent time it becomes...'). Additionally, there are minor errors in verb forms and prepositions, such as 'people become having doubts'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on sentence boundary punctuation and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using more conditional or passive constructions, would also be beneficial.
