Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 173 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay attempts to address why businesses emphasize newness and whether this is positive or negative, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack sufficient explanation or relevant examples. The second body paragraph is particularly fragmented, with an incomplete sentence ('businesses encourage .') and a lack of logical connection to the prompt. To improve, you must expand on your points with detailed explanations and concrete examples to ensure all parts of the task are fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay uses some basic cohesive devices such as 'To commence with' and 'Moving on further', but the logical progression is hindered by the lack of content. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak. The second paragraph is especially problematic, as the sentences do not flow logically, and the abrupt ending makes the overall structure feel incomplete. To achieve a higher score, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that ideas are linked smoothly using a wider variety of cohesive devices, rather than relying on simple transition phrases.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. Phrases like 'a subject of discussion' and 'concrete conclusion' are somewhat generic. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'provide a more accurate recode' (likely meaning 'record' or 'data') and 'by that only we came to know'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and collocations that are appropriate for formal writing, and ensure that your word choices accurately reflect your intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'by a wider consumer base, which provides a more accurate recode' is a fragmented clause. There are also issues with article usage and sentence construction, such as 'by that only we came to know'. The incomplete sentence in the second paragraph further lowers the score. To improve, focus on sentence construction, ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and proofread carefully to eliminate basic errors in grammar and punctuation.
