Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the ever increasing competition in markets businesses used to demonstrate their products latest in the region. It is due to surging demand of new products. I think the demerits associated with it are more than merits which makes it a negative development.

To commence with, there are many reasons which causes this situation. The obvious reason is that the people living in a society tends to show others their new products because they have a false belief that by these things they become modern and upper than others. Since the people always remain keen to buy new products so it provides encouragement to companies to produce latest products. For example, mobile phone companies usually launch new mobiles and new advertisements because they they know people will attract towards them and buy their products.

Furthermore, it can cause many problems. The first problem related with it people bought brand new things and throw away the old ones. It can cause a lot of trash. Moreover, some things cannot be recycled so it adds to the soaring pollution of the world. Dangerous gases emits by their material. It also has an effect on the moral ethics of persons as they always want to get rid of old products. They become showy always remain active to exaggerate their new products. Benefits of old products will be ignored and their respect will be gone.

In the conclusion, i should say companies should lessen their advertising of new products as it can have a bad impact on society

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize newness and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention consumer psychology and environmental concerns, the arguments lack depth and specific, illustrative examples. For instance, the point about mobile phones is a good start, but it could be expanded to explain the 'planned obsolescence' strategy more clearly. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph fully explores the 'why' and 'how' behind your claims, providing more detailed reasoning to support your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'In the conclusion'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. Additionally, the referencing within sentences is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'related with it people bought', which disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'recycled', 'pollution', and 'competition'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'upper than others' instead of 'superior to others' or 'exaggerate their new products' when you likely meant 'showcase' or 'flaunt'. To improve, focus on learning collocations and more precise academic vocabulary to express your ideas with greater sophistication and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people... tends to show'), article usage, and verb forms (e.g., 'Dangerous gases emits' instead of 'are emitted'). Punctuation is also inconsistent in places. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they are noticeable throughout the text. To progress, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent tense usage, while also attempting to incorporate more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
