IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this 21st century, many corporations claim their product is new every time they advertise their product. This campaign is for the market competition and for the consumer psychology. Certainly, it is negative development, but also has some positive development in my opinion. The reasons for the same are discussed in the ensuing paragraphs.

First and foremost, there are lot of companies who start everyday with the motive of solving a problem. With an advertising campaign, they can show people which problems their products solve or how customers effectively benefit from them. For instance, if an individual working in his corporate job is exhausted sitting in a chair and he sees an advertisement of chair with head rest and reclining function. This will definitely give feeling of upgrading his chair for better comfort at workplace. This will be the win-win situation for both the consumer and the company.

However, this tendency poses a number of concerns to both society and businesses. This trend causes consumers to always expect "newness" in every new version of an item, which is quite impossible. Subsequently, entrepreneurs will probably have to exaggerate even useless features or add ones that buyers cannot make use of. Beyond that, when businesses market their products as symbols of status or luxurious lifestyles, buyers tend to make decisions based on desire rather than necessity. To illustrate, the majority of individuals buy Apple products, namely the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, to show off their wealth and novelty. This may lead people to impulse buy instead of using their current belongings.

In conclusion, emphasising new capabilities in advertising is crucial in today's intense market. I believe that the benefits of this development can outweigh the drawbacks when done ethically.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize 'newness' and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as the focus on problem-solving and the psychological impact on consumers. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the second body paragraph provides a good example regarding Apple, the first paragraph is slightly generic. The position is clear, although the conclusion could have been more explicitly linked to the arguments presented in the body paragraphs to ensure a more cohesive stance. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the positive and negative aspects. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'However', and 'Subsequently' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the 'win-win situation' in the first paragraph and the broader topic could be more tightly integrated. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision, such as 'intense market', 'impulse buy', and 'consumer psychology'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'negative development' (should be 'a negative development') and 'lot of companies' (should be 'a lot of companies' or 'many companies'). The range is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly, but there is limited use of less common or idiomatic language that would be required for a higher band score. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'In this 21st century' (should be 'In the 21st century'), 'advertising campaign' (missing article), and 'advertisement of chair' (missing article). Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'The reasons for the same are discussed'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally correct. The writer shows control over basic structures, but more consistent accuracy in complex sentences is needed to reach a higher band.
