Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the contemporary world, science and technology have advanced significantly. People get get greatly excited when a new product is launched in the market. Businesses nowadays present their products as more improved versions in their advertisements, which directly or indirectly influence the general public. There are several reasons for this. In the subsequent paragraphs, I will discuss on this. Also, I believe it is a negative development.
To begin with, firms usually introduced new products or the old products with new packaging and additional features. Consumers are often attracted to these products because they believe that the latest versions offer better quality and improved performance. As a result, companies can create curiosity among customers and encourage them to purchase their products. For instance, Apple company launched iPhone 16, followed by the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, which have better camera clarity, a faster processor, and more RAM, providing a better user experience. These additional features create excitement among consumers and encourage them to purchase the latest models, even when their existing phones are still functional. Therefore, it encourages excessive consumerism.
On the other hand, frequent purchasing of new products badly impacts the environment. As consumers are encouraged to replace their old products with the latest versions, the amount of waste generated increased. For example, when companies frequently launch new models of smartphones, many consumers dispose of their old devices and purchase the latest ones. A large number of these discarded electronic devices end up in landfills, where they can release harmful substances into the soil and water. Therefore, the continuous production and replacement of electronic products can contribute to environmental pollution and the growing problem of electronic waste.
In conclusion, businesses emphasize the new features of their products to attract customers and increase their sales. However, this trend is a negative development because the frequent replacement of products contributes to electronic waste and causes environmental damage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly explain why businesses emphasize newness—to drive sales and create consumer curiosity—and you provide a clear stance that this is a negative development. The ideas are well-supported with relevant examples, such as the iPhone release strategy and the environmental impact of electronic waste. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction provides a more nuanced thesis statement rather than simply stating you will discuss the topic. The development is logical, and the position remains consistent throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'As a result,' and 'On the other hand' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for the trend from the evaluation of its impact. While the structure is sound, some transitions are slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that referencing between sentences is always precise to maintain a smoother flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary world,' 'excessive consumerism,' and 'environmental pollution' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'discuss on this' (which should be 'discuss this') and 'get get' (a repetition error). To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items. For instance, instead of 'badly impacts,' you could use 'exerts a detrimental effect.' Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is generally clear. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'firms usually introduced' (should be 'introduce') and 'the amount of waste generated increased' (should be 'increases'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on maintaining consistent verb tenses and ensuring subject-verb agreement. Incorporating a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, would help demonstrate greater control over your grammar.
