Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize 'newness' and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of why businesses focus on new products is limited to a brief mention of publicity. The arguments regarding the positive and negative impacts are present but lack depth and specific, well-explained examples. The conclusion clearly states your position, but the supporting arguments throughout the body paragraphs are underdeveloped, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'Despite of mentioned advantages' (should be 'Despite the aforementioned advantages') and 'Other than this'. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between comparing prices and stocking up on diapers feels abrupt. While there is an attempt to use linking words, the flow is frequently interrupted by grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, which limits the overall coherence of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'Today's era showing the products' and 'younger ones ask for the food'. The use of 'costliest' is grammatically incorrect in this context (should be 'most expensive'), and 're both merits' is a clear error. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'promotions' and 'financial planning', the overall range is limited, and the errors occasionally make the intended meaning slightly unclear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'every shoppers get to know' (subject-verb agreement), 'it's benefits' (incorrect use of apostrophe for possessive 'its'), and 'according the age' (missing preposition). There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the errors in basic grammar, such as article usage and pluralization, are persistent. These errors are noticeable and occasionally cause the reader to pause, which is characteristic of the Band 5 level.
