Student answer (Band 6.0)
In this neoteric era, advertisements plays a crucial role in every businesses survival. They emphasize that their products are new in some ways. I consider this as a negative development and validate my reasons that this increase lack of innovation of products and consumers are being tricked by the businesses.
To begin with when there is lack of innovation and competitors are rising, businesses tend to advertise that their products are better in one way or another. Most of the time they add minor changes to their products or packaging and advertise them to be different from the other products. For example the company Suzuki release new versions of their most selling car model "Alto" every year but there is rarely any difference to notice, they make minor changes to their exterior details and sell them as new versions. This is because there is lack of innovation as businesses do not want to increase their expenditure by creating a new product.
Further more modern advertisements use vast amount of technology which gives an outstanding output for the products, through these visually appealing and eye catchy advertisements people are getting tricked into buying the same products thinking there those products new and better in some way. For example the Detergent companies release various models of their powders and liquids, even though their formulas are all the same they sell each models at different rates and market it in way that each of them are different with distinct colors, packaging and advertisements. Most consumers are tricked by these types of marketing of products.
To conclude companies should focus more on innovation and increasing transparency of their products instead of solely relaying on false advertisements and promotion for their businesses survival.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize 'newness' and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. The ideas, such as the lack of genuine innovation and the use of deceptive marketing, are relevant and supported by examples like the automotive and detergent industries. However, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, the essay could briefly acknowledge why businesses feel pressured to do this (e.g., market competition) to provide a more balanced view before concluding it is negative. Overall, it fulfills the requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Further more', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'thinking there those products new', which disrupts the flow. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother in the second body paragraph to reach a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some sophisticated terms like 'neoteric' and 'expenditure', though 'neoteric' feels slightly forced in this context. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'every businesses survival' (should be 'every business's survival') and 'solely relaying' (should be 'relying'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and spelling to reach the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('advertisements plays', 'competitors are rising' used incorrectly in context), missing articles, and punctuation errors. The phrase 'thinking there those products new' is grammatically incoherent. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve your score.
