Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the emphasis on 'new' products and expressing a clear negative stance. However, the development of ideas is limited. The explanation for why businesses emphasize 'newness' is somewhat superficial, focusing on profit rather than the psychological appeal of innovation. The arguments regarding the negative impact are repetitive and rely on generalizations, such as the claim that all discounted items are defective. To reach a higher band, you need to provide more nuanced reasoning and specific, well-explained examples that directly relate to the 'newness' aspect of the prompt rather than just general advertising.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices (e.g., 'To sum up', 'For example'), the connections between sentences are often weak or confusing. For instance, the transition between the benefits of advertising and the critique of 'trapping' customers lacks a clear logical bridge. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of your argument. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would significantly enhance coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'business holders' instead of 'business owners' or 'marketers', and 'comprehend with relative discounts'. The phrase 'play with the psyche' is a good attempt at more sophisticated language, but overall, the vocabulary remains somewhat repetitive and basic. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'advertisements' and 'business'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'advertisements gain popularity... Most of the business holders emphasis'), punctuation, and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack necessary articles and prepositions, which occasionally impedes readability. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty, leading to confusion. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect pluralization.
