Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertisements are one of the best ways for marketing any product. There is no denying that many businesses are now displaying that their products are different from already available products in the market through advertisement. This essay will give practical reasons behind it and will explain why I feel that it is a negetive development.

To begin with, the primary reason for this is survival. Market has become more competitive and businesses are facing difficulties to continue to operate. Businesses need different ways to gain more popularity for their products. Furthermore, to achieve this they need to make advertisements showcasing the uniqueness of their product to attract more customers and increase their sales. Another point worth mentioning is that people often get bored with old and widely available products. They need something new and unique. For instance, in past people had old keypad based phone which were capable of doing almost every task required, but people wanted something more and as a result companies developed new smart touchscreen phones and people really enjoyed the latest innovation.

Changes in products are needed for both people and businesses. However, many companies delibrately advertise their products as something different just to raise their sales. A good example of it could be Apple, advertising new features which are already available in the market. Although, using complex and unique names to selling the same old thing is profitable for them. Influenced by those attractive advertisements people tend to purchase the latest Apple products without any special features, Which is just a waste of money.

In conclusion, businesses are using advertisements as a medium of marketing to display the uniqueness of their product and to survive in the market, whereas some companies are exploiting marketing just to make more profit. From my perspective, it is completely a negetive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for emphasizing 'newness' and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the explanation regarding market competition and consumer boredom is relevant, the argument regarding Apple is a bit narrow and could have been expanded to discuss the broader societal impact of consumerism or planned obsolescence. The ideas are relevant, but they lack the depth required for a higher band score, as the analysis remains somewhat superficial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons from the critique. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the sentence starting with 'Which is just a waste of money', which lacks a clear antecedent. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, but the flow could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'deliberately' and 'innovation'. However, there are spelling errors ('negetive', 'delibrately') and some word choice issues, such as 'displaying that their products are different' instead of 'highlighting' or 'emphasizing'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The repetition of basic terms like 'products' and 'advertisements' also limits the lexical variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Market has become' (missing article), 'in past people had' (missing article), and 'to selling the same old thing' (incorrect verb form). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in sentence boundaries, such as the fragment starting with 'Which is just a waste of money'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
