Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, business often emphasise in their advertisements that their products are new or improved in some way. This is mainly because companies want to attract more customers and compete with other businesses. In my opinion, this is a positive development because it encourages innovation and provides consumers with better choices.

There are several reasons why businesses focus on the new features of their products. First, people are naturally interested in new and modern things. Therefore, when a company introduces a new product or an improved version, customers may become curious and want to try it. This can help businesses increase their sales. Second, there is strong competition between companies that sell similar products. Advertising new features helps a business stand out from its competitors and attract more customers.

I believe this trend is positive because competition encourages companies to improve the quality of their products. Businesses need to develop new ideas and use modern technology to remain successful. As a result, customers can benefit from more useful and convenient products. In addition, consumers have a wider range of choices because different companies offer products with different features and prices. For example, customers can compare several smartphone models and choose the one that best suits thier needs and budget.

In conclusion, businesses mainly emphasise that their products are new because they want to attract customers, increase sales and compete in the market. Overall, io consider this a positive development because it encourages companies to innovate and gives consumers better products and more choices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the emphasis on 'newness' and a clear opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the explanation regarding consumer curiosity and market competition is well-supported. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore potential drawbacks of this trend (e.g., planned obsolescence or environmental impact) to demonstrate a more comprehensive understanding of the topic, which would elevate the depth of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The referencing is generally clear. To improve, the student could use a wider variety of cohesive devices or vary the sentence structure to ensure the flow feels more natural and less mechanical, which would help in achieving a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terms such as 'innovation', 'competitors', and 'convenient'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common language. There are no significant errors in word choice, but the essay lacks the 'less common' or 'sophisticated' lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of control. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary to enhance the overall quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a good control of basic grammar and attempts some complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There is a minor spelling error ('thier') and a small typo ('io' instead of 'I'), but these are infrequent and do not impede communication. The range of structures is sufficient, but to reach a higher band, the student should aim to use a greater variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with more consistent accuracy.
