In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many companies claim in their advertisements that they provide unique products and services compared to others. This essay will shed light on the reasons behind this, and I think that this trend has more benefits than drawbacks.

Nowadays, organisations always try to show their products in different ways. This scenario has some reasons, and the primary cause is that profit is their first priority, so they always put effort into increasing sales. If they show their products in a creative way on screen, they can easily improve their revenue and profit. For instance, if a company has a business of chocolate and describes how all its flavours have a unique taste, the demand for its products in the market would suddenly rise.

Another reason is that they all have huge competition in the market. They always have to come up with creativity in order to stay competitive, especially in the technological world. Audiences mostly prefer those products which are new and beneficial compared to others, so businesses always emphasise uniqueness.

I personally consider that this trend has some negative developments, as I think that industries sometimes promote harmful products in a creative way without explaining the truth. Consuming wrong items because of advertisements or showing off could put people's lives in danger, especially when it comes to food products. As a result, those companies can become a reason for certain health issues and mislead the population.

In conclusion, all companies have their own purpose for presenting their products in the market, and this has some benefits, but I think that this trend could have a negative impact on our lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the emphasis on 'newness' and providing a personal opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as the focus on profit and market competition. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on the negative aspects is brief and could have been expanded with more specific examples beyond a general mention of 'harmful products'. The position is clear, but the conclusion contradicts the introduction slightly, as the introduction states the trend has 'more benefits than drawbacks', while the conclusion focuses more on the negative impact. Further elaboration would strengthen the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as profit motives or market competition. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'Another reason', and 'As a result', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the positive aspects and the negative aspects is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There is some use of topic-specific vocabulary like 'revenue', 'market competition', and 'technological world'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrases such as 'put effort into' or 'show their products'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise, academic collocations and less common lexical items. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choices are generally accurate, though they lack the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, the use of conditional sentences ('If they show their products...') is handled well. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, and the writing style is quite straightforward. While the grammar is generally reliable, more variety in sentence subordination and the use of more advanced grammatical features (such as passive voice or varied modal verbs) would improve the score. Punctuation is used correctly throughout.
