Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary period, business firms mostly prioritize on claiming their products as different in the marketing campaigns. I think it has both advantages and disadvantages as the businesses would be able to increase their sales, however, the excessively misleading advertisements could reduce the consumer's trust .

On the one hand, businesses organizations would be able to increase the sales by attracting many people. The claims made in the advertisements would encourage the buyers to purchase the products in order to tryout the new features. If the profits and the sales of the company increase, then the government would receive an increased amount of tax revenue and more jobs would also be created as the rise in the demand would encourage the company to increase its manufacturing capacity. As an additional number of manpower would be required, more people would be recruited. For instance, if a mobile phone company attracts the public by advertising its waterproof technology, then the demand would rise, resulting in an increased number of hirings to produce and distribute more mobile phones in the market.

On the other hand, if the claims which are made in the commercials are false, then the consumer's trust and loyalty would fade away. Firstly, people purchase the product for using the new innovative feature claimed by the firm's in its marketing campaigns. If the buyers do not meet the expectations, then they would boycott the products, resulting in the reduction in sales. Consequently, the company would face hurdles in sustaining the business, which might result in the mass layoff of the employees. For instance, people would stop using the mobile phones of the company falsely claiming it as waterproof, which would decrease the revenue and the profit, resulting in the firing employee's layoff. Thus, the businesses would suffer.

In conclusion, businesses might increase the short-term profits by claiming that their products are different from others, leading to an increase in the tax revenue for the government and the number of jobs. However, if the claims do not meet the consumer's expectations, then the company would face losses, leading to mass layoff of the workers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the emphasis on 'newness' in advertising and discussing both positive and negative developments. The position is clear throughout. The ideas are generally well-developed, particularly the economic impact of successful marketing and the potential for consumer backlash. However, the development could be slightly more nuanced; for instance, the link between 'newness' and 'innovation' could be explored more deeply to reach a higher band. The structure is logical, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the benefits and drawbacks is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Consequently', and 'Thus' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. While the flow is generally good, some of the referencing could be more precise to avoid minor repetition, but overall, the cohesion is managed well and does not attract negative attention.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. The student uses relevant terms such as 'contemporary period', 'marketing campaigns', 'manufacturing capacity', and 'boycott'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'prioritize on claiming' (should be 'prioritize claiming') and 'firing employee's layoff' (which is redundant and slightly awkward). However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more sophisticated collocations and a wider range of less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are several persistent errors, such as unnecessary articles ('the consumer's trust', 'the mobile phones') and minor punctuation or pluralization issues ('firm's' instead of 'firms'). While complex structures are attempted, they are not always perfectly executed. The majority of sentences are clear, and the errors do not significantly impede the reader's understanding, but they prevent the response from reaching the 7.0+ level for accuracy.
