IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Most of the advertisements emphasis that their products are new in some ways weather its depend on the company that they are telling truth or lie but most of the companies tell lies about their product in their advertisement which is totally negative because they just tell the benefits of their products and hiding affect from the generally public.
According to me it is a negative development that they claims that their product is new in some way for example a soap and new benefits of using their soap like if a person use their soap they will get glowing skin and a fragrance but the company don't tell the chemicals included in the making of that kind of product and customer have to be aware of the side effects of the chemicals and substances included in the product.
There is nothing new in the market because most of the possible inventions are already used and has been used by many different types of firms and the new product just modify the existing product and sell it to the market by telling new features involved in their product.
However not all companies are same some of them tells truth in their advertisements and which provides an positive image of the brand as well as more customers prefer their product if they are telling truth among society.
In conclusion, it is evident that all the advertisements are not same as some of them tell truth and some of them told lie about their product that it is new invention but in reality it is a modified version of existing products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize 'newness' and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is limited. The explanation for why companies use this tactic is somewhat superficial, focusing heavily on the idea that companies 'tell lies' rather than exploring the marketing psychology behind novelty. The argument is repetitive, and the examples, such as the soap analogy, are simplistic. To reach a higher band, the response needs to explore the underlying reasons for this trend more deeply, such as consumer psychology or competitive advantage, rather than just focusing on the honesty of the claims.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often mechanical and lacks sophistication. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive (e.g., 'most of the companies', 'in conclusion'). While there is a logical progression from the introduction to the conclusion, the transitions between sentences are basic, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. For instance, the connection between the claim that 'there is nothing new in the market' and the previous paragraph about soap is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive, which restricts the ability to convey complex ideas. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'hiding affect from the generally public' (likely meaning 'hiding effects from the general public') and 'weather its depend' (whether it depends). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the basic message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. The student relies on simple, everyday language and struggles with accurate collocations, which occasionally makes the text feel unnatural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('companies tell lies', 'company don't tell'), tense consistency ('has been used'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation, which makes them difficult to follow. While there is an attempt at complex sentence structures, these are often faulty, leading to confusion. For example, 'weather its depend on the company that they are telling truth or lie' is grammatically incorrect and impedes clarity. A greater focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement is essential.
