Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is widely recognized that businesses use different methods to attract more customer. Nowadays, many companies highlight their products are new or improved in some way. This is mainly because companies want to attract more consumer and compete with other brands. In my opinion, this is a positive development and both pros and cons will be discuss with my supporting ideas in forthcoming paragraph.
One primary reason for this trend is strong competition in the market. Companies want their products to look completely different from those of their competitors. By using words such as "new", "improved", or "better", businesses can make customer interested in their products. Another reason is that many people enjoy new things and may believe that a new product has better features. For example, a mobile company may advertise a new model with a better camera, long lasting battery, and discount in price to encourage more people to buy it. As a result, companies can more profit or famous through competition.
I believe this can be a positive development because competition can more encourage companies to improve their products. Businesses may spend more money on research and development to create modern technology, use artificial intelligence, safer products, or more convenient services. Therefore, customers can enjoy improved products and have more choices. However, some companies may use "new" only as a marketing strategy but they only copy other companies products and encourage more people to buy things they do not really need.
To conclude, businesses mainly highlight the new features of their products to attract customers and compete to other. Although this can be sometimes encourage unnecessary spending, I believe it is generally a positive development because competition can lead to better products and more choices for consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize newness and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as market competition and the drive for research and development. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why consumers are attracted to 'new' products is brief. While the position is clear throughout, the analysis could be deepened by exploring the psychological aspect of consumerism or the long-term economic impacts of planned obsolescence. The response meets all requirements but stays at a general level of discussion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for the trend from the evaluation of its impact. Cohesive devices such as 'One primary reason', 'Another reason', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some mechanical transitions and occasional awkward phrasing, such as 'compete to other' in the conclusion, which slightly disrupts the flow. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between ideas could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'research and development' and 'artificial intelligence'. However, there are several instances of word-form errors and collocation issues, such as 'can more profit' (should be 'can make more profit') and 'compete to other' (should be 'compete with others'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the lack of precision and occasional errors in word choice prevent it from reaching a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles. Examples include 'both pros and cons will be discuss' (should be 'discussed'), 'make customer interested' (should be 'make customers interested'), and 'competition can more encourage' (should be 'can further encourage'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs and passive voice.
