Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, businesses usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. This happens because companies want to attract more customers. If people get to hear about new advancements in a product, they become more attracted towards buying that product. While this trend offers several advantages, I believe it also brings some drawbacks making it both a positive and a negative development.

On the one hand, advertising that their products are new in some way can be a positive development because it increases the companies revenue. This is because this advertising approach helps to attract more people and increase the chance of buying their product. This in turn increases the revenue of the company. For example, if a company launches new smartphone by showing their unique features, this encourage people to purchase their smartphone. As a result it will increase the company's revenue. Furthermore, this trend shows the uniqueness of the company. The people will know a product by the company's name because of the uniqueness of the product. Due to this, the company may stand alone in the market.

On the other hand, there are some negative consequences of this trend. Firstly, if the product does not meet the customer expectations, this may affect the company's reputation. For instance, the company creates hype by advertising the product's unique features. If it does not fascinate the customers, the company's image may be severely damaged. Additionally, this trend becomes a threat for competing businesses. If customers shift to an advertised product, the rival companies may loss the large number of customers, which lead to decrease their market share.

In conclusion, companies advertising that their products are new in some way help to gain customers and increase their revenue, it also brings challenges such as damaging company's reputation and posing a threat to competing businesses. Therefore, I would consider this trend to be a mainly positive development but at the same time companies should look at the negative consequences of this type of advertising.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize newness and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant and logically organized. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the explanation of 'increasing revenue' is restated multiple times in the second paragraph without adding significant depth. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on the 'why' with more nuanced analysis, such as the psychological impact of consumerism or the role of innovation in market competition, rather than focusing solely on revenue.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the connection between the smartphone example and the company's uniqueness could be more tightly integrated to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advancements,' 'unique features,' and 'reputation.' However, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'new' and 'product.' There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'loss the large number of customers' (should be 'lose a large number of customers'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and topic-specific collocations to show greater precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist, such as 'this encourage people' (subject-verb agreement) and 'lead to decrease their market share' (should be 'leads to a decrease in'). Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentence structures are slightly awkward. To achieve a higher score, focus on eliminating these basic errors and increasing the variety of complex sentence forms, such as using more conditional or passive constructions.
