In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, businesses often emphasise that their products are new or innovative in some way in their advertisements. This is mainly because companies constantly improve their products based on technological developments and customer feedback. In my opinion, this is a positive development because improved products can provide greater benefits to consumers in the future.

One major reason why companies highlight the new features of their products is the increasing level of competition in the market. Businesses need to attract customers by showing that their products are different from those of their competitors. For example, smartphone companies frequently advertise new models by focusing on improved cameras, longer battery life and advanced software. Such innovations can encourage consumers to purchase newer products and can also motivate companies to continue investing in research and development. As a result, competition can lead to better-quality products and more choices for customers.

Another important benefit is that product development can make people's lives easier and more convenient. Companies often use customer feedback to identify problems with existing products and introduce improvements in their newer versions. For instance, manufacturers of household appliances may develop energy-efficient washing machines or refrigerators that consume less electricity while providing better performance. These developments can save consumers both time and money in the long term. Moreover, technological improvements can contribute to safer and more environmentally friendly products.

In conclusion, businesses increasingly promote the new and improved features of their products because of competition, technological progress and changing consumer demands. Although some advertisements may exaggerate the benefits of new products, I believe that this trend is generally positive because it encourages innovation and provides consumers with more efficient and useful products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify why businesses emphasize newness (competition, technological progress) and provide a well-supported opinion that this is a positive development. The ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the smartphone industry and household appliances. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes your main points. To reach a band 8 or 9, you could further explore the potential negative implications of this trend—such as consumerism or planned obsolescence—to provide a more nuanced, balanced discussion before reaffirming your positive stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Another important benefit', and 'As a result' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The flow between sentences is smooth, and referencing is clear throughout. The structure is professional and easy to follow, meeting the criteria for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'technological developments', 'energy-efficient', and 'planned obsolescence' (or similar concepts) would elevate the response. You use words like 'emphasise', 'innovative', and 'motivate' accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and natural, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a band 8 or 9. However, there are no errors in word choice that impede communication, and the language is consistently formal and academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'Although some advertisements may exaggerate the benefits of new products, I believe that this trend is generally positive'. Punctuation is accurate, and there are very few, if any, grammatical errors. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more advanced conditional sentences, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
