Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, businesses in their advertising often emphasise that their items are new in some extent. Some companies do this so that people feel attracted towards the products and buy them . I really think its a negative development because it hide so many things and products details from the customers.

There are several reasons why i believe its a negative development. Firstly, people most of the time get scam because what they saw in the advertisement about the item often turn out to be fake or misleading. Because of that people feel bad and they stop buying products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 98 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While you identify the trend of businesses emphasizing 'newness' and state a negative position, the ideas are severely underdeveloped. You mention that advertising can be misleading, but you do not provide sufficient examples or a balanced discussion to support your argument. To improve, you must expand on your points with specific examples and ensure you address all parts of the prompt, including the reasons why businesses use this strategy, in much greater detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is too short to demonstrate a clear logical progression or effective paragraphing. While there is a basic attempt to organize ideas using transition words like 'Firstly', the lack of a proper introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion makes the overall structure inadequate. Cohesive devices are used in a very mechanical and limited way. To achieve a higher score, you need to develop a clear structure with distinct paragraphs that each focus on a specific aspect of the argument, using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits your ability to convey complex ideas. Phrases like 'people feel bad' and 'items are new' are simplistic and lack the precision required for an academic task. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'new in some extent' (should be 'to some extent') and 'get scam' (should be 'get scammed'). To improve, you should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to marketing and consumer behavior and practice using more sophisticated synonyms to express your opinions clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that hinder clarity. For example, 'it hide so many things' should be 'it hides', and 'what they saw' should be 'what they see' to maintain consistent tense. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with few attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, such as the space before the period in 'buy them .'. To improve, you need to practice subject-verb agreement, verb tense consistency, and the use of more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, while ensuring your punctuation is accurate.
