Student answer (Band 6.0)

With our evolution and constant development, we require innovative products for us. We are also achieving amazing new products that are very useful and essential for us. As people are working more and more to manufacture new items for our usage, the companies need to promote their new innovation to everyone, so they perform advertising of the products.

But in their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way, which is a complete wrong practice. These companies desperately try to sell their products to the consumers by deceiving them.

I genuinely think that this practice is completely wrong as the sellers breaks the trust of the buyers and tricking or confusing them. The manufacturer should not emphasise wrong message to the consumers just to prove that their product is new in some way, even if it's not as this is negative development.

For example, a certain company manufactured a new serum and claims that this new brightening serum is better than the old one as this serum is more effective and shows results quickly. But in reality, the company only changed the logo and shape of the bottle and the components of the item remains the same. Now some people may believe that it is true and will buy it after they watch an advertisement of it on a television. But after using the product, some may find out the reality soon or after. This is ultimately lead to bad impression of the company which will also affect the business and the buiness may face bad circumstances. Not only the public will boycott the serum but they will also stop using the other products which are manufactured by that company. This is lead the company to decline it's sale and profit remarkably.

So it's better to show reality rather than faking about the products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize 'newness' and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat limited. The explanation for why companies advertise is brief and repetitive. While the example of the brightening serum is relevant, the argument remains somewhat narrow, focusing only on deception rather than exploring other reasons for advertising, such as market competition or consumer psychology. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'why' aspect with more depth and ensure your position is supported by a broader range of arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is occasionally disrupted by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions. For instance, the transition 'Now some people may believe...' and 'This is ultimately lead to...' feels mechanical. While you use some cohesive devices, they are often used in a way that makes the progression feel slightly disjointed. The paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved by using more sophisticated linking words to connect ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence-to-sentence connections.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'wrong practice,' 'bad impression,' and 'bad circumstances.' There are also some collocation errors, such as 'perform advertising' (should be 'advertise' or 'run advertising campaigns') and 'faking about the products.' To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to business and marketing, such as 'misleading claims,' 'brand reputation,' or 'consumer skepticism.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the sellers breaks,' 'the components... remains,' 'This is lead'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence structures. While you attempt some complex sentences, they often contain errors, such as 'This is ultimately lead to bad impression.' You need to focus on basic accuracy, particularly with verb forms and articles, before attempting more complex structures. A more careful proofreading of your work would help eliminate these recurring errors.
