IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays almost everything that needs to be sold requires an advertisment in order for it to be sold. The sellers want to keep selling their products again and again. But they can't do it if they are reusing the same advertisement again and again. So they keep adding little tweaks and emphasize them again and again in their ads. I think this is a good idea and I will give reasons for my answer further in the essay.
Advertising is the most effective way of selling your product, because it helps to get the attention of those people who want to buy that product.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 104 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially. The essay introduces the topic and states a position, but it fails to develop the arguments or provide the required examples. The discussion is superficial, and the prompt's requirement to explain why businesses emphasize 'newness' and to evaluate whether this is positive or negative is not adequately explored. To improve, you must expand your ideas with specific examples and ensure you address every part of the prompt in detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is too short to demonstrate effective paragraphing or a logical progression of ideas. While there is a basic attempt to link sentences, the lack of development makes the overall structure feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal, and the flow is interrupted by the abrupt ending. To achieve a higher score, you need to organize your response into clear paragraphs, each with a topic sentence, supporting arguments, and relevant examples, using a wider range of linking words to connect your ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'sold', 'advertisement', and 'again and again'. The range is limited, and there is no attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary that would be expected in an academic essay. To improve, you should aim to use a broader range of synonyms and collocations related to marketing and consumer behavior. Avoid repeating the same phrases; instead, try to vary your language to express your ideas more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammar is generally simple, consisting mostly of basic sentence structures. There are some errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'emphasize them again and again in their ads'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of complex sentence structures prevents a higher score. To improve, focus on incorporating a variety of complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, and ensure your punctuation is accurate throughout the text.
