In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is deniable that many enterprises represent their products as a unique one in recent days because this kind of advertisement makes their product extraordinary to the customers. While there might be some drawbacks, from my perspective, it is a positive development in product markets.
There are several reasons why it is positive for the companies to advertise their products having new features from others. To begin with, this strategy helps them to convince individuals psychologically because people always look for something one-of-a-kind. Moreover, adding some new distinctive features in their product makes it more attractive to people. For instance, every year, Apple company launches a new variant of their phone, upgrading some technical features unique to the old one, which attracts the customer.
In addition, technological advancement is rapidly increasing now-a-days, therefore, it becomes indispensable to update any product convenient for the modern life, particularly the electronic devices. Therefore, if the businesses produce their goods uniquely and advertise accordingly, they may get quite popularity, which, in turn, may enhance their revenue enormously.
Nevertheless, there might be some negative impacts the companies face while publishing their commodities. The most imperative challenge is that continuous upgrade creates a huge competition among the enterprises, which sometimes leads them to show false marketing to achieve higher number of customers. However, the advances businesses are getting can outweigh this issue if the authority maintains a proper quality assurance team.
To conclude, I would like to reiterate my opinion that advertising unique features of the product is a substantial positive development for businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize newness and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the psychological appeal of 'one-of-a-kind' products and the necessity of technological updates. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why this is a positive development could be more deeply explored beyond just 'attractiveness' and 'revenue'. The example of Apple is well-chosen but could be integrated more smoothly to support the argument. Overall, the response covers all requirements but would benefit from more detailed analysis to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for the trend from the potential negative impacts. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Nevertheless' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the awkward phrasing in the opening sentence ('It is deniable that...'). Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'technological advancement', 'indispensable', and 'quality assurance'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing. For example, 'It is deniable that' is used incorrectly to mean 'It is undeniable that', and 'get quite popularity' is grammatically incorrect. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, some contain errors, such as '...advertise their products having new features from others' and '...update any product convenient for the modern life'. There are also minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more error-free complex structures and pay closer attention to preposition usage and verb patterns to ensure greater grammatical control.
