Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize 'newness' and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding economic growth is a bit superficial, and the example of the 'cousin's company' is personal and lacks the depth required for an academic essay. While a clear position is maintained throughout, the supporting arguments could be more robustly extended to reach a higher band. The response stays on topic, but the analysis of the 'why' and the 'positive/negative' aspects remains at a fairly general level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'another significant factor' and 'to put in brief', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'In my imagination' to introduce an opinion. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be improved to make the connections between ideas more seamless. Overall, the structure is coherent, but the use of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility required for a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'prevailing', 'rational', and 'populace'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'burns oil midnight' (the idiom is 'burn the midnight oil') and 'make twice profit' (which should be 'double their profits'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise control over idiomatic language and collocations to reach the next level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'This would results better' (should be 'result in better'), 'proves beneficial' (should be 'prove'), and 'for the the general populace' (repetition). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. While the writer attempts complex sentences, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The majority of sentences contain minor errors that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable.
