IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Presently businesses are emphasising on their product's new features in their marketing. They are doing this to attract more buyers for their products. I would consider it as a positive development because they are working to make their products better.

Businesses are mentioning the newness of their products in the advertisements and it is because they can attract more customers. Businesses usually do this to increase their revenue by just introducing more appealing elements in their products. As a result, they will have more customers and more profits. For instance, people are increasingly taking interest in EV cars because different brands are doing extensive marketing on their new hybrid engines. Initially people were afraid of these engines, but after good marketing campaigns people get aware of the benefits of new age engines.

In my opinion, it not a negative development, it has many good aspects. Companies are making their products more proficient and more good for people use. That is important to ensure the product compatibility with the changing technologies and public preferences. Resultantly, their products would be more reliable and more efficient and people will likely to use them. For example, different online tools based companies are shifting their systems on Agentic AI, so their systems would handle visitors and tool subscribers with better efficiency.

In conclusion, companies are introducing their products as a new product in some points. Companies are doing this to have more customers and profits. I think it's a positive development because different organizations are doing research and development to build good products for people usage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for emphasizing 'newness' and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide examples like EV cars and Agentic AI, the analysis remains quite superficial. For instance, you mention that companies do this to 'increase revenue,' but you could have explored the psychological impact on consumers or the potential for planned obsolescence to provide a more nuanced argument. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of discussion is more characteristic of a Band 6 level, as the ideas are relevant but not fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'As a result' and 'For example' are used frequently, and the transition between sentences can feel a bit disjointed. To reach a higher band, you should aim for a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using more sophisticated referencing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on simple descriptors like 'good' (e.g., 'more good for people use') and 'new' throughout the text. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'online tools based companies' and 'people will likely to use them.' To improve, you should focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology. While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items used with awareness of style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'emphasising on' (should be 'emphasising'), 'it not a negative development' (missing 'is'), and 'people will likely to use them' (should be 'people will likely use them'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the recurring errors in verb forms and prepositions indicate a lack of control over more complex structures. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band.
