Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary world , the business are significantly representing their products in various different or new fashion in various characteristics or fashion due to saturated markets , even the curious customers as well as competitions. I firmly consider it as a pessimistic development as it leads to diverse effects and has gloomy impact on the consumers.

Firstly, the primary motive of companies is to earn profit, by grasping the attention of consumers, hence human psychology is tend to naturally drawn to new experiences and innovations, a trait the marketers intentionally follows to create a sense of excitement and even urge of making purchases with variations in their promotion methods by involving well known celebrities. For instance, smartphones annual upgrades with minor updates, yet the advertises it in an exaggerated manner;this leads to the old models to appear total obsolete encouraging the consumers to upgrade to newest versions to simply to maintain the social prestige.

However, I strongly believe this trend carries profound negative implications for society. When the advertisements constantly encourages the consumers to make a purchase of the latest goods, it leads to unnecessary financial strain. People frequently buy the products they genuinely do not require, indulging them into debts, by strongly believing that it will improve the quality of life.

Furthermore, it has impacts on environment as it promotes the throwaway culture leads to wastage of resources and damages the environment. Production of new items requires massive amount of raw material and energy, the resources are accelerated and depleted. Concurrently, the older working model is thrown away prematurely, leading to make a new purchase. For example, the fashion and tech products fills landfills globally with hazardous materials, contributing heavily to pollution and ecological imbalance.

In conclusion, businesses focus only on the marketing campaigns on the novelty products and manipulate human preference for innovations. Despite the short-term economic benefits, i consider it as a negative development because it encourages financial irresponsiblity among the consumers and leads to further irreversible harm on our planet's ecosystem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why businesses emphasize novelty and providing a clear opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is consistent throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the environmental and financial consequences of consumerism. However, the explanation for why businesses emphasize novelty is slightly repetitive, focusing heavily on 'human psychology' and 'profit' without exploring other potential factors like market differentiation or technological advancement. Despite this, the main points are relevant and supported with clear examples, such as smartphone upgrades and the impact of throwaway culture, meeting the requirements for a Band 7 score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the argument well, justifying a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for the expression of complex ideas. There is an attempt to use less common items like 'saturated markets', 'ecological imbalance', and 'irreversible harm'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'the business are significantly representing', 'human psychology is tend to', and 'the advertises it'. These errors occasionally distract the reader but do not impede communication. The range is sufficient for the task, but more precision in word choice would be needed for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('the business are', 'human psychology is tend to') and article usage ('the environment', 'the throwaway culture'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing spaces after commas. While these errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points. The control of grammar is sufficient for a Band 6.
