In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Most business today have formed the act of advertising their product as new in a way. This is because they have most likely studied a pattern of adverting that worked and different businesses may be using the same ideas. This may also happen when adverting company find it diffcult to come up with fresh ideas. This is a negative development.

Most businesses nowadays, hire publicity team that manges their advertising and social media.Once they see that a company manages the social media and advertment of another business, and they see that the style of adverting works and the business is making sales they all want to do the same. Most business owners like to play safe with their businesses. They choice a partern that they have seen to work and stick solely to that styles of adverting. They all want to use the same agency that the first person used, and most time they go as far as requesting the same style that was used for the first person. This is not recommended as the consumers at some point gets bored of the idea and lose interest in the product. It may also lead to cases of copyright. Wanting to know who owns what. For example a food business owner will want to use the adverting idea of another food business because he think they are making sales because of the advertment they did.

One the otherhand, most social media managers and advertising companies are lazy. They find it difficult to come up with fresh ideas for different companies, and end up using the selling the same new product idea for more than one company. In most case they sell the idea the use for a food business owner to a dish washing company, the only different is that they highlight the dish washer and not the food like they did for the food business. This may lead to intellectual propety thief and cause issues between the business.

While, it may be good to play safe with one business. By holding on to what they think works. Misusing idea or in most cases over consumption of an idea by the audience may not also lead to sells as they think. The next company with a fresh idea makes more sells than those trying to act safe.

I think that most companies, this days advert their product in the same way because businesses are trying to play safe and most adverting agency are lazy and find it difficult to come up with new ideas. This may have negative impa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing why businesses emphasise new products and offering a clear position that it is a negative development. Ideas are extended, such as explaining how companies follow safe patterns and how advertising agencies can be lazy. However, some arguments become repetitive, and the response ends abruptly mid-sentence ('This may have negative impa'), which prevents full development of the final thought. The position is clear throughout, but the lack of completion slightly impacts the overall task coverage, placing it at a solid Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a logical overall arrangement with paragraphs used to separate different points, such as business motives, agency laziness, and the negative consequences. However, paragraphing is sometimes awkward, and cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical. Phrases like 'Most business today' and 'One the otherhand' show clumsy transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and logical progression is disrupted by repetitive phrasing and the abrupt ending of the text. Overall, the structural framework meets the criteria for Band 5.5, showing some organisation but inadequate cohesive control.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'intellectual property', 'over consumption', and 'publicity team'. However, there are numerous word-choice and spelling errors that detract from precision, such as 'adverting' instead of 'advertising', 'manges' instead of 'manages', 'advertment' instead of 'advertisement', 'partern' instead of 'pattern', 'sells' instead of 'sales', and 'propety' instead of 'property'. Despite these frequent errors, communication is generally maintained, aligning well with the Band 5.5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Most business today have formed', 'consumers at some point gets'), incorrect article usage, and punctuation errors. Furthermore, fragments and run-on sentences appear, such as 'This may also happen when adverting company find it diffcult to come up with fresh ideas.' The incomplete final sentence also highlights grammatical instability. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 profile.
