Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding why businesses emphasise new products and whether this is a positive or negative development. The writer presents a clear position, stating that it is generally positive while acknowledging negative aspects. However, the ideas are relatively simple and lack deep development or specific real-world examples. For instance, the discussion on advertising methods remains quite general, mentioning 'buy one get one free' without further expansion. This level of development aligns with Band 5, where ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, though the prompt is still sufficiently addressed to meet passing expectations for task coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and poor referencing. Transitional markers like 'First of all' and 'Secondly' are used, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is often faulty or mechanical. For example, sentences in the second paragraph jump abruptly between different advertising strategies without clear connections. Referencing is also problematic, as pronouns such as 'they' and 'it' often have ambiguous antecedents, making it difficult for the reader to follow who or what is being referred to. Paragraphing is attempted, but the overall structure shows only basic organisational skills, corresponding to a Band 5 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'product', 'advertising', and 'good'. There are numerous word choice and collocation errors, such as 'paying head on it', 'sale ration', and 'low type of things'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary result in inaccuracies that occasionally impede communication, such as using 'expansive' instead of 'expensive'. The range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, reflecting the descriptors for Band 5, where noticeable errors and restricted vocabulary cause difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the essay. There is a very limited range of structures, and attempts at complex sentences frequently fail, resulting in ungrammatical constructions like 'They advertising that their businesses nowadays usually giving special importance that their product are new is some way.' Subject-verb agreement errors, tense inconsistencies, and incorrect prepositions are pervasive (e.g., 'Some gives', 'They wants', 'dont having'). These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader, matching the core descriptors for Band 5.
