Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining both why businesses emphasise product novelty and whether this is a positive or negative development. The writer takes a clear position in the introduction stating that it is a negative development due to environmental degradation and overconsumption. Ideas are supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the mention of Apple releasing new iPhone models annually. However, some arguments could be extended further to achieve higher bands. For instance, the discussion on consumer psychology could be more thoroughly unpacked. Nevertheless, the position is well maintained throughout the essay, and the main components of the prompt are adequately satisfied, placing the response solidly at Band 6.5 to 7.0. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled with a clear structure and relevant supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the prompt, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate different arguments, such as the advantages of novelty in the second paragraph and the disadvantages in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, transitional phrases like 'In the contrary' (instead of 'By contrast' or 'On the other hand') reveal awkward mechanical links. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and some sentences lack smooth transitions. While the logical progression is evident, these recurring cohesion issues prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Improving the variety and accuracy of cohesive devices will enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'environmental degradation', 'overconsumption', and 'competitive market'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'highliting' instead of 'highlighting', 'helts' instead of 'helps', 'dispite' instead of 'despite', and 'contributues the the' instead of 'contributes to the'. Furthermore, phrasing like 'brighter side of companies showcasing the product as new' is slightly unnatural. These errors do not impede communication as the reader can easily follow the intended meaning, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as in the opening sentence: 'It has been observed that, businesses frequently highlights...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in agreement and punctuation, such as 'businesses frequently highlights' (subject-verb agreement), missing commas before dependent clauses, and run-on sentences like '...new design, it creates a buzz...'. Capitalisation errors are also present ('iphone'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. The control over complex structures is somewhat inconsistent, placing this aspect of the writing at a Band 6.0.
