Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent times, companies are trying to advertise that their products are unique from the existing products. The main reasons behind this trend are that the busineses want to attract more customers and to stay competitive in the market. From my perspective, it is a positive development because it is not only profiting the companies, but also addressing the needs of the society.

One of the main reasons for companies those are enhacing their products uniqueness is that they can attract customers. When a company has something new in their products and advertise it, more people get attracted towards it, and want to try that specific product. Another reason is that companies want to stay competitive in the market. Nowadays, there is a huge competition among every market. Furthermore, people have several options of a particular product. For instance, there are many shampoos in the market, people will definitely get attracted towards a product with specifications.

In my opinion, this development has its strength, such as businesses can generate more profits. When a company launch something new, which other products do not have, then individuals buy such products more. As a result, companies get profit. Another positive aspect is that it is meeting the needs of people. Our population is increasing, everyone has its own needs. When several varieites are available, it will be easy for people to meet their needs. To illustrate this, people with acne will choose specific product according to their needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining the reasons why businesses emphasise new products and providing a clear position that this is a positive development. Ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing consumer attraction, market competition, profit generation, and meeting societal needs. For instance, the mention of acne products illustrates how specific needs are met. However, some arguments remain slightly repetitive and could be further developed with deeper analysis to reach higher bands. Overall, all requirements of the prompt are successfully met, showing a clear understanding of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is coherent overall with a clear logical arrangement and appropriate paragraphing. The introduction sets out the background and the writer's position, followed by body paragraphs dedicated to reasons and evaluation, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', 'As a result', and 'To conclude'. However, some cohesive referencing is slightly mechanical or repetitive, and transition between ideas within paragraphs can occasionally feel abrupt, such as the shift between sentences in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader through the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'unique', 'competitive', 'specifications', and 'generation'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'busineses' instead of businesses, 'enhacing' instead of enhancing, 'launch' instead of launches, and 'varieites' instead of varieties. Furthermore, collocation is sometimes awkward, as seen in 'stay competitive in the market' or 'it is not only profiting the companies'. These vocabulary errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over complex structures, as seen in conditional-style clauses or relative clauses like 'When a company has something new in their products and advertise it...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including subject-verb agreement issues ('companies those are enhacing'), article omission ('choose specific product'), and preposition usage ('several options of a particular product'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
