Student answer (Band 6.0)

Businesses nowadays try to add some new functions or facilities in their advertisements as they emphasize their products to be different from others. This is because they want to attract a wide range of customers. Additionally, I believe this is a positive development, because when business owners try to be different, they add new services or facility within the product and ultimately customers can get benefits from that.

Firstly, talking about the different strategies and methods that businesses use to market their products is to attract a wide range of customers. In other words, they one to reach to the large group of customers and attract them by using a creative method of advertisement. Most of the time they offer additional services or benefits along with the product. As a result, customers get attracted and choose their products over their competitors. For example, a furniture company which provides an expert to recommend the best way to place the furniture in their house along with the product, generally gets the better attention of the customers.

I personally believe this is a positive development, because people can get more benefits as business owners try to be different from others. This is because, many companies nowadays are looking for various methods of promoting and attracting the customers, so they add additional services or product in the original product. They also attract customers by giving them discounts or launching a campaign of a grand prize for a lucky winner. As a result, customers can get value for their price. For instance, an electronic company multiplies its sales by launching an offer of grand prize to one of the lucky customers.

To conclude, many companies are adapting different creative methods and strategies to attract a wide range of customers which I believe is a positive development. This is because, customers can get benefits and value for their price.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why businesses emphasise that their products are new, and whether this is a positive or negative development. The writer takes a clear position that it is a positive development and supports this throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with examples, such as the furniture company providing expert placement recommendations and the electronic company launching a grand prize campaign. However, some arguments feel slightly repetitive in phrasing, such as reiterating that customers get 'value for their price' and 'benefits' multiple times. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or 7.0; here, the ideas are sufficiently supported to meet the Band 7 threshold.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The writer uses basic cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'Firstly', 'In other words', 'As a result', and 'To conclude'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the explanation of the phenomenon from the discussion of whether it is a positive or negative development. However, progression occasionally feels mechanical due to repetitive transitional phrases and minor referencing issues, such as 'they one to reach to the large group of customers' where pronoun reference is slightly clunky. This level of organisation and cohesion aligns well with a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'competitors', 'promotional', and 'strategy'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'facility within the product' instead of 'features' or 'functions', and 'an electronic company multiplies its sales' which is contextually unnatural. Spelling is generally accurate, but limitations in collocation and precision prevent the response from achieving a higher band score. The lexical control observed fits the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing (e.g., 'when business owners try to be different, they add new services...'). However, grammatical errors occur with some frequency, such as preposition misuse ('reach to the large group' instead of 'reach a large group'), article omissions ('an electronic company' vs 'an electronics company'), and minor verb form slips ('they one to reach'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the essay from reaching Band 7. A score of 6.0 accurately reflects the balance of mixed structures and persistent non-systematic errors.
