Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, businesses advertising their products usually for emphasise that their products are new in some way. I beleive that, this is a negative development because this step encourages to people to spending their money on unnecessary things.

One major reason is that this development helps companies to attract individuals to their products and increased their sales. For example, using new features, highlighting new designs, and aslo gave some attractive dicounts attract to audience and encourage to people purchase somthing. Another major factor is that people want to try latest things so when they see attractive bands advertising videos they wish to try something latest. As a result, consumers may become interested these products even their exsiting products still working.

On the other hand, this trend has several negative impacts on consumers and also on environment. One major drawback is that it encourage to people to purchasing unnecessary things that they already exsit. When comanies constantly promote their products as a new then people may feel they need to replace exsiting product even product still working. For instance, when a mobile company advertise their new launch phone with attractive design and better camera quality so this promotion encourage to audience to purchase new phone even their exsiting phone still in good working condition. As a result, people waste their money on unnecassary things.

In conclusion, although advertising the products with latest technology enhance the businesses sales, I beleive that this trend have negative impact on audience because they waste their savings on unnecassary products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing why businesses emphasise that their products are new and whether this is a positive or negative development. The student takes a clear position that it is a negative development, stating in the introduction and conclusion that it encourages unnecessary spending. Ideas are relevant, suggesting that companies use novelty to boost sales and attract consumers who want the latest things. However, the development of these ideas tends to be repetitive and somewhat limited in depth. For instance, the points about mobile phones and wasting money are reiterated multiple times without introducing fresh supporting dimensions. The response meets the minimum length requirement, but the arguments remain at a somewhat basic level of elaboration, aligning best with a Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptor. Given the clear positioning and relevant ideas, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, providing a logical framework with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Overall progression is attempted, but cohesion is often faulty and mechanical. The student attempts cohesive devices and transitions, such as 'One major reason', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', which help structure the text. However, referencing and transitions within paragraphs can be awkward, as seen in sentences like 'As a result, consumers may become interested these products even their exsiting products still working.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate main ideas, but the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disrupted by grammatical errors and repetitive phrasing. Therefore, the coherence and cohesion of the response fit comfortably within the Band 5.0 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate vocabulary range to discuss the topic, attempting some less common items such as 'unnecessary things', 'consumers', and 'advertising videos'. However, lexical control is weak throughout the text, with frequent word-choice errors, unnatural collocations, and spelling mistakes. Examples include 'for emphasise', 'I beleive', 'dicounts', 'aslo gave', 'exsiting', and 'comanies'. Phrases like 'encourages to people to spending' demonstrate persistent issues with word formation and collocation. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points about consumerism and advertising, the density of errors in spelling and word form restricts the lexical score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like structures (e.g., 'when they see attractive bands advertising videos they wish to try something latest'). However, grammatical accuracy is very low, with frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and sentence construction. Examples include 'businesses advertising their products usually for emphasise that', 'encourages to people to spending', 'aslo gave some attractive dicounts attract to audience', and 'trend have negative impact'. Many complex structures are faulty, and basic agreement or tense rules are frequently broken. Because these errors are dense and occasionally impede smooth reading, the grammar score is constrained to Band 5.0.
