Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary world, business companies are showing that their products are novel in some manner, in their advertisments. I believe that the reasons behind this are a highly competitive industrial makret and attraction of people toward new items. Although this way of advertisment may pursuade customers in a subtle way and benefits the companies, I believe that this is a negative development because it can mislead people and affect the financial calculations of households.

To begin with, one of the compelling reasons behind this is that the competition among industries has increased in the modern era. Manufacturers are copying each others style and providing same facilities to buyers. Several companies, in addition to that, are launching same kind of products frequently. Consequently, people are influenced to buy items which has some unique features than other available products in the market. A smartphone brand Apple, for instance, recently launched a foldable mobile to attract costumers and people were in qeues to buy that phone, and it is giving a tough competition to an another mobile manufacturer called Samsung.

Furthermore, people can be decieved by such advertisements. By and large, advertisements may delibrately display the new features of the products, while the drawbacks are hidden in under the name of terms and conditions. As a result, people may get excited by watching advertisment banners and make a purchase, and later they may find the drawbacks while using those items. Secondly, due to continuous launching of new products in the market, people would probably buy them frequently in order to match the social status with others. Financial crisis, consequently, may happen in the households due to repetitive purchase of the new products.

However, firms can attract buyers in a subtle way after showing novelty of their products through advertisements. People always want to use new and upadated products in order to make their life easy and enhance their social status as well. On top of that, manufacturers would earn a colossal amount of money just by highliting the uniqueness of their products in the advertisments.

In conclusion, I believe that the increased competition among companies and attraction of people towards buying new products are the reasons why companies are highliting their products as novel in some way. While this way of advertisment can encourage more customers easily and companies can earn more money, I advocate that it is a negative development because people can be misleaded easily and their financial calculations can be disturbed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the reasons why businesses emphasize new products (competitive market, consumer demand for novelty) and evaluating whether this is a positive or negative development. A clear position is maintained throughout, arguing that it is a negative development due to deception and financial pressure on households. Ideas are generally extended and supported, such as the example of Apple launching a foldable phone. However, some arguments, particularly in the body paragraphs, tend to over-generalise or overlap slightly between causes and effects. Overall, the task response meets the requirements for a Band 7.0, as the prompt is fully addressed with a clear position and supporting examples, though further depth in exploring the counter-arguments could elevate the score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, such as market competition in the first body paragraph and consumer deception in the second. Cohesive devices are used adequately and generally appropriately (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'Consequently'), though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or formulaic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically throughout the response. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional minor slip-ups in cohesion prevent the text from achieving a higher band. Overall, this demonstrates the clear logical organisation and cohesive management characteristic of a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'contemporary world', 'novel', 'subtle way', and 'colossal amount'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors (e.g., 'advertisments', 'makret', 'pursuade', 'costumers', 'qeues', 'decieved', 'delibrately', 'upadated', 'highliting', 'misleaded') and occasional awkward word choices (e.g., 'business companies', 'financial calculations'). These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips occur frequently enough to impede fluency slightly, preventing the essay from reaching a Band 7.0. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate, reflecting an adequate vocabulary with some recurring spelling and word-formation errors that do not severely hinder overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'Although this way of advertisment may pursuade customers...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with articles, preposition usage, and word forms (e.g., 'hidden in under', 'an another mobile manufacturer', 'match the social status with others', 'after showing novelty'). While these errors do not impede communication, they persist across the response and prevent the structures from achieving the frequent error-free sentences required for a Band 7.0. The control of grammar and punctuation fits comfortably within Band 6.0, where a mix of structures is attempted alongside non-impeding errors.
