IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently many businesses focus on conveying a message that they have latest products through advertising. This happens when competition is high and companies want stability in the business.

The approach to present products as latest and innovative by companies is a new technique to survive in the dynamic market and earn more money. For instance, Apple have used different marketing techniques during the launch of iphone 18 that have new colors and few minor different features compared to iphone 17 making it possible for them to stand in the competitive market and get more funds through the sales.

This approach can benefit the companies that can play a significant role the economic development as companies can expand their operations providing more job opportunities in the country. For example, BYD was all over the media as it had new products to fill a gap in the automobile sector leading to it's expansion worlwide and it has started to build production plants in many countries like Pakistan that can help China and Pakistan both economincally.

In contrast, few companies imposes unjustified charges by showcasing their products as new due to which many customers are left dissatisfied leading to trust issues. Such cases are common in developing countries like Pakistan where Honda and Toyota exploited people for many years by selling the same models for high prices.

I consider the idea as a positive approach as things around us are rapidly changing and every morning there is a new development. Targetting the audience by showcasing products as new is a beneficial technique to survive in the tough competition.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining both the reasons why businesses advertise new products and whether this is a positive or negative development. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the references to Apple, BYD, and automotive companies in Pakistan. For example, the writer notes that businesses highlight newness to survive in a dynamic market, and contrasts economic expansion with instances of exploitation where companies charge unjustified prices for minor updates. While some ideas could be slightly more deeply developed to reach the highest bands, the task response is well-rounded, fully relevant, and effectively meets all core requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organization. It is divided into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing reasons, positive aspects, negative aspects, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'For instance', 'In contrast', and 'I consider the idea as a positive approach'. However, paragraphing and referencing can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or abrupt, and minor connective slips occur, such as missing articles ('play a significant role the economic development'). Despite these minor flaws, the progression of ideas is coherent and easy to follow throughout, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including terms such as 'dynamic market', 'competitive', 'economic development', and 'exploitation'. There are occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'Apple have used' (plural verb agreement error) and 'imposes unjustified charges' (where 'impose' does not collocate well with 'charges' in this context). Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, fitting the Band 6.0 profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like structures effectively (e.g., 'This happens when competition is high and companies want stability'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Apple have used', 'company imposes'), missing prepositions, and punctuation slips. For instance, 'leading to it's expansion worlwide' contains a spelling error ('worlwide') and a contraction/possessive mix-up ('it's' instead of 'its'). Although these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher grammatical band.
