Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The student attempts to address both parts of the prompt regarding why businesses emphasise new products and whether this is a positive or negative development, though the second part is only touched upon implicitly. Ideas are heavily under-developed due to the brevity of the response, which falls short of the 250-word minimum at 213 words. Phrases like 'consumers are attracted to new ideas' lack full elaboration, and arguments regarding textile industries and industrialists remain repetitive and fragmented. The position is discernible but not fully sustained or articulated with sufficient supporting evidence. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, which requires a score in the lower bands according to the descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text suffers from significant organizational issues. There is no clear overall progression of ideas, and paragraphing is irregular and confusing, with very short, abrupt lines such as 'FOR EXAMPLE'. Cohesive devices are generally absent, misused, or mechanical, leading to disjointed sentences like 'Then the product beat in the market all privous product.' Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical links between the arguments about industrial staff, engineers, and textile examples. Overall, the essay lacks a coherent structure and smooth transitions between ideas, fitting the characteristics of Band 4.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, featuring frequent spelling errors ('focuesd', 'privos', 'industrialest', 'hair', 'root maps', 'lounge', 'experinceable') that strain the reader's understanding. There are instances where word choice is inaccurate or unnatural, such as 'hair the new qualifed staff' instead of hiring qualified staff, and 'tuff competition'. While the student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to manufacturing and design ('engineers', 'fashion designers', 'textile industry'), the high density of lexical errors and limited range restrict the score to Band 4.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting predominantly of simple or poorly constructed sentence forms with frequent structural errors. Complex structures are rare and almost always faulty, as seen in 'The textile industry were not haired the technical staff and experinceable fashion desiginner the industry not compited in the market.' Errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions are pervasive and frequently distort meaning. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing periods and commas that disrupt sentence boundaries. The frequency and nature of these errors place the response firmly in Band 4.
