Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing why businesses emphasise new products and giving a clear opinion that this is a positive development. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying heavily on a single extended example about socks and another about a celebrity endorsement. While the position is clear throughout, the explanation lacks the depth and extension expected for higher band levels. For instance, the argument that branding changes the perception of a product is introduced but not fully explored in terms of consumer psychology or market competition. Nonetheless, the task is adequately addressed, placing this performance at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a standard essay structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is some attempt at logical progression, but overall cohesion is mechanical and sometimes faulty. Transitional phrases like 'In additional,' 'for example;', and 'In conclusion,' are used, but referencing is frequently unclear, such as 'that differences was actually made' or 'that will bring positive changes.' Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion lacks smooth flow, leading to a somewhat disjointed reading experience. These limitations align closely with the Band 5 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive throughout the essay. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'contemporary times,' 'seggregate' (misspelled), and 'entrepreneur,' but inaccuracies in word choice and collocation are noticeable. Examples of unnatural phrasing include 'grabbing markets attention,' 'letting the advertisement done by a professional,' and 'earn more than the previous entrepreneur.' Spelling errors like 'seggregate' and grammatical word-form errors like 'sells' instead of 'sales' occur. The range is adequate to convey simple messages but remains limited, fitting the Band 5 criteria well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are persistent subject-verb agreement and tense errors, such as 'Advertising are important,' 'business nowadays mostly claims that their product are,' 'the claim was it was positive development,' and 'if i make conor McGregor advertised.' Punctuation is also problematic, with semicolons misused and lowercase letters used for proper nouns and pronouns like 'i'. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, this performance corresponds to Band 5.0.
