In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Businesses nowadays advertise their products or services by emphasising that their products are new in some way. It is because the market has become saturated and businesses want to generate revenue inorder to survive. This technique playes as a ladder for them to stand out in the market and also helps them generate a new or unique selling point for their consumers.

In this era of technological advancement businesses tend to suffer to thrive in the market. Advertising the product in a way consumers get attracted to is the stratergy to follow. For instance, there are many soap brands in Pakistan, every brand comes out and states something new about their product such as a soap brand claims kojic acid is present in their soaps, ultimately helps them to standout from the rest of the competition.

This plays a positive role for the businesses. They have a better chance to stand out in the market and thrive. Many businesses fail because they lack the art of advertising their products in a unique way. This development has been crucial for the businesses as this also helps them globalise. Advertising a business by giving it a unique edge helps them to get rid of homogenization.

In conclusion, It is crucial for businesses to advertise their products by giving them a unique selling point so that the consumers are attracted to, resulting in higher revenue for the business. This development provides businesses with great opportunities to make their place in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, explaining why businesses emphasise newness (saturated market, revenue generation) and giving a clear opinion that this is a positive development. Ideas are relevant, such as the example of soap brands in Pakistan using kojic acid to stand out, though some explanations feel slightly repetitive or under-developed. Furthermore, the length check indicates that the student's response contains 249 words, which narrowly misses the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, a slight penalty has been applied under Task Achievement for failing to meet the minimum word count. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure full task length is achieved and extend the supporting arguments with deeper analysis rather than restating points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing the causes and the evaluation, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, logical progression is sometimes hampered by repetitive phrasing and weak cohesive devices. For instance, phrases like 'This plays a positive role' and 'This development has been crucial' are used mechanically to transition between points. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of sophisticated transitional phrases keeps the flow somewhat disjointed. Overall, the organisation demonstrates adequate coherence for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'saturated', 'homogenization', and 'unique selling point'. However, there are notable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'inorder' instead of 'in order', 'playes' instead of 'plays', and 'stratergy' instead of 'strategy'. Collocations are also occasionally awkward, such as 'businesses tend to suffer to thrive'. While these lexical inaccuracies do not heavily impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning ('so that the consumers are attracted to'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward punctuation, including a comma splice in the conclusion ('In conclusion, It is crucial...'). Other minor errors include missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms. Despite these persistent errors, the majority of simple sentences are accurate, and meaning is generally clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
