Student answer (Band 6.0)

The increasing emphasis on marketing products in such a way that people will consider it as a new innovation, is new strategy for businesses. Although this method is highly beneficial for the business, it also impacts consumers on buying same product from different companies. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this business development.

Consumers are naturally attracted to novelty. 'New' creates curiosity and makes people feel that this product is better than the alternative. This increases the likelihood of trying or buying it. In crowded markets, company stands out for launching new product. It builds an image of uniqueness and creativity for the company.

One potential benefit of this trend is that advertising new product encouarge innovative and give consumer access to improved product. For instance, every year IPhone and Samsung launch new smartphones with upgradation in color, battery, camera or system. The marketing creates attention towards new launch with a huge number of customers every year.

However, the concept of 'New' diverts the attention to purchase products which they do not actually need. It establishes the wrong perception of superiority in society and also leads toward financial and enviromental waste. As people replace functioning phones and electronic devices simply because a newer version has been advertised as an innovation.

In the conclusion, businesses tend to emphasis the novelty of their products beacuse it enables them to attract consumers and distinguish them from competitators. Although promoting new products can stimulate innovation, the consumer cost can arise when novelty used mainly as a marketing technique rather than reflecting meaningful improvement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing why businesses emphasise novelty and evaluating whether this is a positive or negative development. The writer presents a clear position throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as when discussing consumer attraction to novelty and the example of smartphone companies like iPhone and Samsung. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise slightly, and the development could be pushed further for a higher band. For example, the negative impacts are introduced well but remain somewhat concise. Overall, the requirements of Task Achievement are met well, aligning closely with the criteria for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 7, where all parts are addressed and a clear position is maintained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are generally coherent, with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the causes and the pros/cons into distinct sections. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Although this method', 'One potential benefit', and 'However'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in minor awkwardness in transitions like 'In the conclusion' instead of 'In conclusion'. Additionally, some sentences lack smooth inter-sentence links. These features place the essay securely at a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'novelty', 'uniqueness', 'diverts the attention', and 'environmental waste'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and grammatical form errors throughout the text, such as 'consider it as a new innovation' (redundancy/collocation), 'company stands out for launching new product' (missing article), 'encouarge innovative' (grammatical form error), and 'competitators' (spelling). While these lexical errors do not impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score. The writer uses sufficient vocabulary to convey meaning effectively, but slips in word formation and precision keep the score at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses introduced by 'Although', 'As', and 'because'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('people will consider it... is new strategy'), missing plural markers ('new product', 'competitators'), and awkward phrasing like 'the consumer cost can arise when novelty used mainly'. Punctuation and articles are also occasionally mishandled. While the complex structures demonstrate an attempt at a varied range, the frequency of grammatical inaccuracies means that simple sentences are often more reliable than complex ones. This performance reflects the descriptors for Band 6.0.
