Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by explaining why businesses emphasise new products and giving an opinion that it is a positive development. A clear position is maintained throughout the response. However, the ideas are somewhat under-developed, particularly in the body paragraphs where explanations rely heavily on simple examples like "Maggie" and coffee without deep elaboration. The introduction is also slightly disjointed and contains awkward phrasing regarding the prompt's core question. Despite these limitations, all prompt requirements are met satisfactorily, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is an overall logical progression from reasons to positive effects and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases such as "Both prospects will be discussed in the following paragraphs" feel formulaic, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as "Doing this kind of competitive activity" in the third paragraph. Paragraphing is used, but internal cohesion within paragraphs suffers from abrupt transitions and grammatical lapses, making the logical flow mechanical at times. This corresponds to a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "purchasing power", "decision-making process", and "innovation". However, there are notable word-choice, spelling, and collocation errors throughout the text, such as "mentioning" instead of "mention", "getting customers attraction" instead of "attracting customers", "by the products" instead of "buy the products", and "sells" instead of "sales". While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a limited control over less common lexical items, keeping the score at a 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("the way they mentioning... seem to new"), tense inconsistencies ("The company are plying with consumer mindsets"), and missing prepositions or articles ("in competitive market", "with lesser price"). Attempts at complex structures are often faulty, and punctuation issues occur throughout the response. These errors require some effort from the reader to decode meaning, aligning with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
